Religion Of
the Tamil Nadu population 88% are Hindus, 6 % are Muslims, and 5.5 are Christians.
The Christians are mostly Roman Catholics and the majority of the Muslims in
Tamil Nadu speak Tamil. In Sri Lanka, the majority of Tamil speakers are Hindu
while the rest are Roman Catholic.However, Buddhism is the majority religion in
Sri Lanka.
The most
popular deity is Murugan, the son of Siva. The worship of Amman, is thought to
drive from an ancient mother goddess, is also very common. Kannagi, the
heroine, is worshipped as Pattiniby many Tamils, particularly in Sri Lanka.
There are also many followers of Ayyavazhi in Tamil Nadu, mainly in the southern
districts. In addition, there are many temples and devotees of Vishnu, Siva, Ganapathi,
and the other Hindu deities.
